Most people don’t associate dessert with dissent, but it happens. In the South Park movie, the boys try to organize a revolution. As they post the announcement for their first La Resistance meeting, one character tells them to add “punch and pie” to the flyer. “More people will come if they think there’ll be punch and pie,” he says.
At Gorsky Press, we’re not trying to organize a revolution. We do, however, appreciate rebellion against the mainstream. We believe in publishing writers who take risks and who move their writing beyond easy classifications. We’re also not above using La Resistance’s tricks. For years, we’ve been promising punch and pie—literally and figuratively—as incentive for people to attend readings or to read the stories we publish. We believe that everyone still loves a good story now as much as they did as children—as much as they love punch and pie.
In this collection, we’ve assembled some of our favorite authors from the underground, authors who continually write and publish, and authors who are gradually building an audience and garnering accolades. We’ve taken one short story from each of these authors, mixed in photographs from Dan Monick, baked for forty-five minutes, and now offer this palatable helping. Enjoy.
